skin type test

The first question that pops into our mind when scrolling through the skincare product list is, “What is my skin type?” We all know the type of coffee we like but iffy when it comes to knowing our skin types. But, Hey! did you know you can take a skin type test to learn everything about your skin?

Yes, you read it right!

Got oily or combination skin? Or parched cheeks that require intense hydration? Whatever it is, learning about your skin type will help you pick the right skincare routine to suit you.

Skin Type Tests to Find Out Your Skin Type

There are three Foolproof ways to do a skin type test and figure out your skin condition.

1. Take the day test

One of the easiest ways to know your skin type is by taking a day test. Keep a check on how your skin performs from morning to evening on typical days.

Results (at the end of the day)Skin type
Does your face look shiny and oily?oily skin
Is your T-zone shiny, but the remaining part of your face is matte?combination skin
Do you have minimal flakiness, oil, redness, or none at all?normal skin
Does your skin feel tight or flaky?dry skin
Is your skin red, itchy, or inflamed?sensitive skin

NOTE: If your skin is dehydrated, that does not mean it is a separate condition. A skin that is oily, combination, or dry can be dehydrated.

2. Try the wash test

Taking a day-long skin type test makes no sense if you shower midday after running errands in the raging sun or windy weather or workout sessions.

To know your skin type wash your face with a mild cleanser and avoid applying any product or makeup on the face. Wait for 30 minutes and notice how your skin feels.

Do this test when your facial skin is calm and not acting up, meaning it’s not stinging or red from using a peel or not too tight because of snowy winter.

3. Get your picture taken

There are some methods that a dermatologist used to examine different skin types. Dermatologists can use photographic methods to evaluate skin behavior like UV filters, Vascular Filter.

Did You Know Your Skin Type Changes Over The Years

Environment changes, pregnancy, diet, and other factors play a major role in your skin type and condition. The best way to judge your skin is to understand it from within.

Touch your skin with clean hands and feel the texture, temperature, and buoyancy. You can also do a soft pinch test to evaluate the hydration level.

When you know your skin type, it is easy to add the right skincare techniques and products to your regime.

Composition, treatments, and support for Oily Skin

Our skin produces natural oils called sebum, to provide moisture. Different people produce oil in different amounts. Although oil production keeps the skin moisturized, it can also create skin problems.

Excess oil gets trapped in the pores and grip dead skin cells causing pimples or blackheads.

Methods To Treat Oily Skin Breakouts

  • Use a bentonite clay mask.
  • Add saltwater-based or seaweed-based toner.
  • Use a sulfur-based spot treatment for blemishes.
  • Avoid using drying products.
  • Check for dehydrated skin-it increases oil production and clog pores.

PRO TIP: Never skip a moisturizer in your skincare routine to promote dryness for treating your acne. Oily skin is best treated with the rightly formulated moisturizer.

WARNING: You must consult a dermatologist if your acne issues are very extreme.

Support and Treatment for Dry Skin

Some people produce excess oil while others have a problem of underproduction, giving them dry skin. Yes, drinking water helps, but sometimes topical solutions are more important.

Use moisturizers based on ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or fatty acids. Layer your moisturizers and serum, keeping the thinnest first and thickest in the end for maximum penetration.

Treatments for Dry Skin

  • Use no-foam cleansing oils or creams
  • Use a humidifier.
  • Avoid hot water while showering or bathing.
  • Skip using the cleanser in the morning.
  • Use deep hydration overnight.

PRO TIP: Avoid over-exfoliating your skin, especially with acids. Do not exfoliate more than once or twice a week.

Support and Treatment for Combination Skin

Some folks have both the characteristics of dry and combination skin. And there is no perfectly formulated moisturizer for combination skin; you need to find what works for you.

You can switch between products during the morning and night based on how your skin acts. Spot treatments also work well for combination skin- using one product on the cheeks and another on the T-zone.

Combination skin breakouts

  • Try a balancing toner.
  • Spot treatments for acne-prone are using tea tree oil.
  • Exfoliate using a gentle enzyme mask.

Taking Care of Sensitive Skin

If no product suits your skin and acts up really quick, you might have a sensitive skin type. You should always exercise caution when adding new products to your regime.

Solutions To Calm sensitive skin

  • Choose fragrance-free products and dyes.
  • Avoid sulfates or parabens in your skincare products.
  • Be mindful when choosing essential oils.

Different skin types need different care. When working on sensitive skin types, carefully use only one product at a time in two to four weeks. Always do a patch test before using the product on the entire face.

Normal skin

If you got a normal skin type in the test, then you are the luckiest of all. However, don’t be careless; make sure to include sunscreen, anti-aging products with retinoids in your routine.

Having normal skin does not mean that it can never go dry, sensitive, oily, or act in combination. Our skin keeps on changing with time, seasons, and diet.

Your skin type test may not be valid forever.

Skin types do not exist the same forever; therefore, one skin type test will not stay valid forever.

Our skin has a personality of its own, like us. At times we feel happy, go-lucky, outgoing, and other times, we just want to stay in our bed full day.   The same thing applies to our skin as well.

Excessive air conditioning, heating can cause dryness to your facial skin, and so can fluctuating hormones during menstruation. Our skin undergoes many changes as we age over time. To know your skin type, you need to keep taking tests.

Same skin type in different persons acts differently. What works on your friend’s oily skin might not work on you. You need to test and try different products and ingredients to find the one which works best for you.
