Johnny Joey Jones was born on July 21, 1986, in Dalton, Georgia, United States, to Joseph Edgar Jones and Joyce Marie Jones. His father worked as a brick mason while his mother stayed at home.

Jones has a sister, Marsha Jones Dalton, who was adopted when she was seven years old, but he is very close to her. Growing up in Dalton, Jones was active and enjoyed playing sports such as baseball and football.

In his leisure time, he assisted his father in his business. Jones has a large extended family and was close to his grandfather and uncles.

While attending Southeast Whitfield High School in Dalton, Jones played football and participated in track and field. He was academically successful and became the first in his family to graduate from high school.

After enlisting in the Marines, Jones traveled to Parris Island, South Carolina, for basic training. He served eight years as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician (bomb technician), responsible for disarming and destroying IEDs (improvised explosive devices).

Jones was deployed on two combat tours, one to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. He helped the military disarm over 80 IEDs during his second tour in Afghanistan.

Tragically, he was injured during one of these disarming operations when he stepped on an IED, which exploded.
